Beer Poineers:  The Movie

On the heels of Beer Wars, a wildly popular movie within the craft beer world released last April, comes a new movie documenting the history of the craft beer industry, Beer Poineers.  This new movie, written and directed by Jay Sheveck and produced by Beer Guppy Media, tells the story of how the craft beer movement in America started back some 45 years ago and continued through the 70's and 80's.  This was long before it has really exploded over the last decade.  The movie was filmed over a 15 year period in which Jay Sheveck traveled and met with many of the early poineers of craft beer.

Beer Poineers will focus on the challenges that were faced back in the beginning of craft brewing by the brewers who chose not to drink what the large beer companies told them to, but instead decided to brew what they liked.  There were significant challenges to these early pioneers, since they were challenging the major brewers in their own markets.  They also had to deal with the public perception of what beer should be.  The consumer had become accustomed to drinking beer that was very pale and lacking many of the ingredients and flavors that these new craft beers featured.

The movie stars many of these trailblazers in the craft beer movement and features interviews with them.  Some of these people include Jim Koch (Boston Brewing Company), Frederick "Fritz" Maytag III  (Anchor Brewing Company), Jack McAuliffe (New Alboin Brewing), Ken Grossman (Sierra Nevada Brewing), Richard Yuengling Jr (D.G. Yuengling & Son), Michael Jackson (Author of "The World Guide to Beer"), Charlie Papazian (Association of Brewers Founder), and many, many more.

Here is a trailer from the movie from Beer Guppy Media.

Beer Poineers is set to be a feature length documentary and should be released in Summer 2010.  We will be looking forward to more information as it comes out about this new movie and look forward to seeing it.  It should be quite a history lesson on the area of craft beer and will do a lot to recognize the great brewers who got everything started.
