BrewDog Tokyo Creating ControverseyFrom the UK comes BrewDog's Tokyo, an imperial stout beer that rivals some of the highest alcohol content beers in the UK. The beer is brewed with jasimine and cranberries and according to their website aged on oaked chips. There has been quite a backlash from some in Scotland saying that the beer's alcohol level is too high and that it is an irresponsible move by BrewDog to release this type of beer when the British Isles are facing increasing problems due to alcohol consumption. Part of the increased reaction to this beer by critics is how BrewDog has choosen to market the beer. The need to point out the high alcohol levels in this beer as a selling pitch is unnecessary and if the beer is to be released, it should be marketed based on its taste. According to BrewDog and their video below, which they put together to show their inspiration for this beer, the idea for Tokyo came from 1980s versions of space invaders arcade games in Tokyo, Japan's capital city. According to BrewDog's website, "The irony of existentialism, the parody of being and the inherent contradictions of post-modernism, all so delicately conveyed by the blocky, pixelated arcade action have all been painstakingly recreated in this bottles contents."
In the end, all of the increased publicity is likely a good thing for BrewDog. They seem to have developed a great beer and based on beer critics reactions it is highly praised for its blend of chocolate malts, roasted flavors, hints of expresso, and the ability to balance all of this out and create a great imperial stout.
